10 Radical Ideas To Save Dolph Ziggler
2. Have Him Kill The Authority
And we’re back to the bad guys again. As mentioned, all indications are that Triple H needs taking off television, and the Authority need retiring. And it’s not like he hasn’t been booked to do it before.
Back in November 2014, Dolph Ziggler was the final man remaining on John Cena’s team at Survivor Series. If Cena’s team won, the Authority would step down from power: if the Authority’s handpicked mendicants were victorious, Cena’s team would be fired.
Ryback and Erick Rowan were easily eliminated from Cena’s team, Rusev and Mark Henry from the Authority’s team. The Big Show turned heel for the twenty-fifth time that year, changing sides to knock Cena out for the elimination, then eliminating himself. That left Ziggler alone against Kane, Seth Rollins and Luke Harper.
Ziggler has never been better than he was on that night, his style perfectly meshing with the ‘embattled babyface’ story being told in the ring. He eliminated Kane with a Zig Zag (yes, I know, shhh) and Harper with a desperation roll-up - but then came the interference, Triple H yanking the referee out of the ring twice when Ziggler had Rollins beaten, then attacking the Show-Off himself, delivering a pedigree.
True, it was Sting’s intervention that saved Ziggler and the match for the good guys, but this is a perfect example of how the story means more than the finish. Ziggler’s heroism was the story of the match, over and above the legend that won it for him or the champion that captained the team. Two weeks later, he accepted a Slammy for the performance, for the Match Of The Year.
Our boy’s recent confrontation with Triple H on RAW proved that he’s still capable of being slotted into the role of anti-Authority protagonist. However, his loss to the Game that same night also proved that the WWE still aren’t happy with committing to Ziggler in that position.
But you’ve got to take a risk sometime. Roman Reigns isn’t the guy to remove the Authority. His motivation was always individualistic, selfish: always based around becoming champion without giving in and going corporate.
So why not Ziggler? Defeating and removing the Authority could be the making of him, at long last: and it certainly makes him a contender for the top title.
