Remember when Sheamus won the King Of The Ring in 2010, and suddenly started to appear for all the world like he had morphed into something from a bad Game Of Thrones rip-off? There's just something about the crown, scepter and robe that comes across like a cartoon, and makes wrestlers look a little silly. Obviously, there have been those who have excelled in the role, such as Booker T, Randy Savage and Jerry Lawler, but those were special cases in their own right. Booker played the character in a quirky manner, everything Savage touched turned to gold in the WWF, and Lawler had long been known for using the 'King' gimmick. It's pretty darn difficult to see the 'King' schtick taking a performer into the main event scene in 2015, it's not nearly hard-edged enough. Yes, silliness does have a place, but WWE seem to much prefer a different kind of heel than the royal gimmick can provide nowadays, and nobody is going to fear King Barrett when Brock Lesnar is kicking around.
