7. Nonsensical Babyface Booking
When this writer heard Stephanie Vaquer beat Liv Morgan for the RAW Women's Championship, he was thrilled. Vaquer is a generational talent, Liv's reign as champion was utterly lackluster thanks to WWE seldom letting her defend the belt, and having the title change occur in Vaquer's home country should have been a reminder that WWE can still book inspirational, uncomplicated tales of good vanquishing evil.
"Should have" being the operative words, because upon actually watching the bout it becomes clear that WWE's bookers are apparently worshipping at the altar of accused WCW murderer Vince Russo.
Russo became infamous for his love of convoluted plotting and distaste for the traditional heel/babyface dynamic, and that was in full effect on what should have been an unqualified triumph for Vaquer. Instead of having the local hero incontrovertibly defeat her hated hero, WWE's brain trust muddied the waters by having Liv Morgan screwed out of the title when guest referee Becky Lynch - also a heel, by the way - refused to count a match-winning fall when Morgan had the match won. Basically, the hero only won because one bad guy screwed over another bad guy.
Not to worry - Vaquer got to look strong on the following RAW by... being beaten up by Liv and her posse.
*Sigh*
Wrestling is at its best when there are strong babyfaces to cheer, and watching WWE drag its heroes through the mud simply isn't entertaining televison.
