For years, fans wondered what would happen if The Rock - who had left WWE to become one of the top stars in Hollywood - were to return to the company. Specifically, comments John Cena made in 2007 questioning The Rock's commitment to wrestling made people wonder what a bout between the two would look like.

In 2011, Rock finally came back to Raw, announcing that he would be the host of WrestleMania 27. At that show, tensions between Rock and Cena reached a head, and The Rock ended up helping The Miz defeat Cena. The following evening on Raw, WWE's top stars, past and present, agreed to a bout against each other at WrestleMania 28.

Naturally, there wasn't a constant build for the year - Cena went into other feuds, while The Rock went back to work in the film industry. In the weeks leading up to the show of shows, though, the two men cut electrifying promos on one another, traveled around the country building up interest in the match, and simply set the stage for what would be the most-purchased PPV event in wrestling history.
