Daniel Bryan returned to WWE in January 2015 after eight long months away from the ring.

This was Bryan's first in-ring competition since he was forced to give up the WWE Championship that he won at WrestleMania XXX. Fans were thrilled to see their hero back between the ropes where he belonged. Just don't mention that year's Royal Rumble...

Bryan was given lots to do upon his return, including main eventing the Fastlane Pay-Per-View and capturing the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 31. Sadly, we didn't get to see what else he could do in 2015, because old demons were once again at Bryan's doorstep.

On May 11th, Bryan took to the ring not to wrestle, but to relinquish his championship. His neck injuries had once again flared up and WWE would not clear him to compete. Bryan gave up the title that night and, in February 2016, he gave his now-infamous "retirement" speech on an episode of Raw.

Thankfully, as we know, this retirement was not to last and Bryan has been able to resume his in-ring career. However, it's important to remember just how close we came to losing this once-in-a-lifetime talent.
