10 Storylines WWE Has Already Messed Up In 2018
5. Roman Reigns Vs. Brock Lesnar
When the curtain went down on WrestleMania 33 last year, most wrestling fans could have told you that the main event of WrestleMania 34 would see Roman Reigns challenge Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship. WWE pressed pause on Reigns's main event push at WrestleMania 31, choosing to pull the trigger on Seth Rollins instead, but this year seemed set to be the Big Dog's big moment.
The build to the match was unusual, positioning Reigns as an anti-authority babyface, in stark contrast to the fan perception of him as the office's golden boy. Brock Lesnar, meanwhile, seldom appeared on television and, coupled with the expectation that he would return to MMA after WrestleMania, he was every bit as unpopular as Reigns by the time the match came around.
Their WrestleMania match was exactly the festival of finishing moves that many feared it would be, culminating in the shock of Lesnar retaining the belt as Reigns lay, gushing blood, in the centre of the ring. They revisited the contest inside a steel cage at Greatest Royal Rumble and a controversial, illogical finish led to Lesnar retaining once again. This is a muddled story that has seen WWE lose its nerve and settle for the path of least resistance - pulling away and waiting for a better moment.
