10 Things AEW Are Getting Absolutely Right At The Moment

7. The Championships Are Important

It may seem somewhat easy considering the relatively brief time that the company has been in existence, but AEW has done a tremendous job of booking its championships. Challengers have had to truly earn title shots instead of simply pinning the incumbent in a non-title or tag team match, and the matches themselves have all been treated with great care and importance.

This might be about to change, as the last few months have seen title matches come more frequently. Take Jon Moxley's AEW Championship reign, for example. Moxley defended the title just twice in his first four months as champion, a number that rises to five over the last four months. The chaos and instability of the COVID-era can shoulder some of the blame, but the promotion needs to steer clear of having too many title matches, too often. Importance is everything.

Once a championship loses that aura of importance, it is tremendously difficult to get it back. AEW has managed to keep its four championships credible over its first year, a testament to those who have carried the belts and those who have challenged them, but this work is continuous.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
