3. He Was Voted Greatest Ever United States Champion By WWE Fans
Although it's very much a WWE belt in this day and age, the United States Championship started out life with the National Wrestling Alliance. WCW eventually procured the belt after Ted Turner changed the name of the title to represent its flagship promotion, and it would spend the rest of its days as the WCW United States Championship until the WWE bought WCW. It's gone on to be held by a number of questionable stars during recent years in the WWE, but there have been some real icons who have held the belt - including Sting. He won it on two seperate occasions during his time in WCW (beating Steve Austin the first time he won the belt), with the two reigns amounting to well over 200 days in possession. That's an impressive feat (given how he was defending it WAY more often than Dean Ambrose did in his record-breaking run), and it was enough for his runs as champ to be recognised by WWE fans. The WWE website ran a poll last year asking fans for their greatest champion in each division of the company. Sting was up against four Hall of Famers, but managed to record a resounding victory, with 53% of the vote. That's a whopping victory, and was perhaps reflected by the clamour from WWE fans to get Sting wrestling with the promotion. It seems like they're going to get their wish as well, given how "The Icon" is signed up at long, long last.
