10 Things I Learned From The 2016 NJPW G1 Climax

1. Kenny Omega May Just Be The Best In The World

When Kenny Omega defeated Tetsuya Naito to qualify for the final, he became only the third gaijin after Rick Rude and Karl Anderson to so. After an epic 27minutes Omega hit Hirooki Goto with the One Winged Angel for the victory and created history in the process, becoming the first non-Japanese winner of the G1 Climax.

When he tones down the clowning and messing around, Kenny Omega is one of the best professional wrestlers on the planet. 2016 has been one heck of a year for The Cleaner, a year that started with him replacing AJ Styles as leader of Bullet Club and defeating Tanahashi for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship.

The final gave us expert pro wrestler Omega, the man who understands ring psychology better than anyone and executes everything with a sharpness that can only be a mixture of natural talent and sheer hard work.

Omega referenced Nakamura, Styles, Ibushi and Prince Devitt (Finn Balor) in the match, but ultimately it was Kenny Omega that stood tall to finish out a truly memorable G1. The Tokyo Dome awaits, as does a potential first time encounter with Okada.

Roll on G1 Climax 27.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
