A barn-burner of a kick-off match against the hottest star in the company wasn't actually the original plan for the Evolution leader at 'Mania XXX.

Up until CM Punk suddenly decided enough was enough on the back of being concussed in the 2014 Royal Rumble match, among other things, Trips was set for what Vince McMahon billed as a "main event" match with The Best in the World.

However, in what no doubt came as a rather unanticipated blow to his ego in the moment, an understandably frustrated Punk later blasted McMahon's decision to once again overlook him in the 'Mania show-closer in the boss' office and claimed this apparent marquee bout was of little interest to him.

In Punk's own words on his infamous Art of Wrestling podcast appearance, The Voice of the Voiceless declared to a very much present Trips, "I am in a position now where I can tell you that I don't have to nor do I want to wrestle you at WrestleMania."

Sure, going at it with Daniel Bryan at the Show of Shows is hardly an awful plan B. But Trips clearly wanted a piece of Punk and wasn't given the 'f***ing privilege" in the end.
