During initial meetings with WWE about his role in the company, Joe told Jericho there were never any promises made to him about making the main roster at any point. In fact, several officials actually told him that he likely wouldn't be used for that purpose, and that building NXT as a separate brand was the reason for hiring him.

On the subject of branding, one WWE employee on the marketing side asked Triple H if the name 'Samoa Joe' would be used in the promotion. Quickly, 'The Game' turned to Joe, asked him if he had trademarked the name, and then dismissed the idea of changing monikers as a non-issue upon finding out that wrestler held copyright.

The process was a smooth one, and Joe claims Triple H wasn't interested in changing his branding at all. That was smart, because the Samoa Joe name carried weight with the same independent wrestling audience WWE were trying to enrapture with NXT.

In just a few short moments, any potential problems arising from WWE's wish to own Joe's ring name were squashed.
