10 Things We Never Thought We Would See In WWE In The 2010s

6. John Cena As United States Champion

Say what you will about John Cena and how he has been shoved down our throats for the better part of the last decade, but he had a better buildup that most main event players on the current roster. He started out as an unknown rookie, had an eye-opening performance versus Kurt Angle on his first night, spent time in the tag team division, held the United States Championship on three occasions, and captured his first WWE Championship at WrestleMania 21. His premier world title win against JBL on the grand stage solidified him as a star and he has never looked back. From that point forward, he was always in contention for either the WWE Championship or the World Heavyweight Championship. Very rarely was he involved in a feud that didn't have championship implications. He was obviously above the Intercontinental and United States titles, and not once did he even attempt to go after either of them. That changed at WrestleMania 31 when WWE put a renewed focus on the midcard championships by having Cena beat the undefeated Rusev for the star-spangled prize, marking his first U.S. win in over a decade. And it wasn't just another prop for Cena, either; he defended that prestigious prize each and every week with pride and honor through his always exciting U.S. Open Challenge. Believe it or not, some of the best bouts of 2015 in WWE involved Cena and the U.S. Championship. He took that title to heights that had never before been reached, doing wonders for both the belt and his own career and previously stagnant character.
