NXT has long been considered WWE's most enjoyable brand by a huge portion of the fanbase, but much of its gloss came off in 2016. "Old and comfortable" replaced "young and hungry" as the roster was invaded by a seemingly endless stream of 35-40 year olds, and NXT moved further and further away from its original role as a developmental territory. The TakeOver specials still delivered, but the brand's buzz was way down, and the weekly show became increasingly skippable.

Fortunately, NXT is finally on the upswing again. TV has been fantastic since WrestleMania weekend, serving up at least one TakeOver calibre match every month, and providing the platform for countless enjoyable storylines. TakeOver remains as great as ever, with Brooklyn III among the strongest shows in NXT history, and while it'd be fanciful to expect the brand to hit its 2015 heights again, the improvement is undeniable.

Wrestlers like Bobby Roode and Shinsuke Nakamura heading to the main roster has cleared the way for Aleister Black, Adam Cole, and countless others to become major stars. NXT feels fresh and exciting for the first time in over a year, and following the new crop of talent on their developmental journey should be a lot of fun.
