10 Things WWE Got Horribly Wrong In 2016

5. SummerSlam

It was not a good year for the traditional WWE Big Four. Survivor Series aside, the classic pay-per-views were dismal affairs, full of confusing booking moves and matches that simply failed to deliver. WrestleMania 32 was far and away the most disappointing of all, but SummerSlam shouldn’t feel enthused by this. WWE’s second biggest show was poor from top to bottom.

The show was headlined by the worst type of Brock Lesnar match, a one-sided squash that saw the Beast Incarnate obliterate Randy Orton with a technical knockout win. It was a peculiar way to end the show, with fans unsure as to whether they had just seen Lesnar go into business for himself or not. It was confusing, and not in the good way.

With the exception of the excellent AJ Styles/John Cena match, the rest of the show was plodding and directionless, and what looked like a good card on paper simply failed to deliver. The Miz defeated Apollo Crews in a five-minute match that would have been wasted on SmackDown Live, Sasha Banks and Charlotte continued their passing back and forth of the Raw Women’s Championship and Finn Bálor was crowned the first ever Universal Champion whilst the crowd took a dump on the title’s look.

The biggest party of the summer was a washout.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
