10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About the Universal Championship
3. Goldberg Ended The Fiend's Streak
Bray Wyatt’s “Fiend” persona was one of the most creative characters WWE had introduced in years. With a horror-inspired aesthetic, unsettling promos, and a presentation unlike anything else on the roster, The Fiend quickly became a fan favourite.
Then came that Hell in a Cell match against Seth Rollins, which ended in a referee stoppage—because WWE forgot what Hell in a Cell was supposed to be. But as bad as that was, things were about to get so much worse.
Fast forward to Super ShowDown 2020, and WWE did what WWE does best... again: they Goldberg’d it. In under three minutes, a man in his 50s steamrolled WWE’s most interesting character, winning his second Universal Championship in three years. It was a baffling decision that felt like Vince McMahon had suddenly remembered WCW existed and decided to relive the glory days.
Goldberg’s reign lasted just 64 days, ending at WrestleMania, but the damage was done. The Fiend never fully recovered, and WWE would rather you forget how badly they botched one of their most unique creations.
