And it was a divide WWE were pretending didn't exist at the time.

Gunn was announced as an an AEW "coach" as part of the company's official formation in January 2019, then appeared on WWE programming as part of D-Generation X's induction into the Hall Of Fame just three months later. This was wrestling history in the making, even if it didn't feel like that at the time.

On a night perhaps more remembered for future AEW Tag Team Champions FTR dishing out a beating to a fan that rushed the stage and tackled Bret Hart, Gunn joined his former stable mates to go over mostly old material save for one notable moment where Triple H referred to All Elite Wrestling as a "p*ssant company" as part of a gag at Gunn's expense.

He'd be made to regret the remark in fairly short order - his beloved NXT continues to pick up the pieces after a damaging and definitive defeat in the subsequent Wedensday Night War.
