10 Times John Cena Embraced Being A Heel

4. The Doctor Of Thuganomics

John Cena had one of the most auspicious debuts in wrestling history. He challenged Kurt Angle with his ruthless aggression, and while he came up short, he earned the respect of the fans and the WWE locker room, most notably The Undertaker. However, he failed to connect with audiences much beyond that, and it would take something drastic for him to find his place on the roster. He turned heel in October 2002, attacking his tag team partner Billy Kidman, blaming him for their loss in the WWE Tag Team Championship tournament. A week later, he attended the SmackDown Halloween party dressed as Vanilla Ice and rapped to Stephanie McMahon. This kicked off his transformation into the hard-edged freestyle rapper that would turn him into a superstar. John Cena was only a heel for roughly a year of his career, but he made a big impact. His cocky, larger-than-life attitude drew a great deal of heat from fans, and his delusional self-image just made him so much easier to hate. As a heel, he often pushed the envelope further than he may have needed to as part of his raps. He once cut an stunningly racist freestyle on Eddie Guerrero, and mocked the handicapped in multiple others.
