7. Triple H Comes Crashing Down To Earth-uh
Triple H was at his most insufferable during the 2019 WWE Hall of Fame ceremony.
He had just promoted NXT TakeOver: New York, one of the all-time great pro wrestling shows, and he was in the mood to tell everybody. As D-Generation X were inducted into the Hall of Fame, he cracked a joke at Billy Gunn's expense. Gunn was bound for the fledgling All Elite Wrestling outfit and claimed that Vince McMahon couldn't fire him anymore. Triple H replied with "[Vince] will buy that pissant company just to fire you again".
And Triple H thought it was a pissant company. Look who was in it.
The Elite?
Triple H had offered the Elite an unprecedented deal, the terms of which were "We'll pay you a fortune, put you on the main roster, and allow you to leave within three months in the inevitable event that Vince's creative is ass".
Erm.
Who else? Jericho?
Jericho was never the guy, just like Edge and Rob Van Dam weren't.
NXT was better than AEW, come on. They'd just promoted a great show built with three months' worth of promos that few people saw and even less remember!
In under 12 months, after Vince made NXT compete with Dynamite head-to-head, AEW had slaughtered NXT in the massacre that was the Wednesday Night Wars and stole its USP as the wrestling alternative. How embarrassing.
Now, you could make the argument that Triple H had the last laugh, since he presides over the main roster now, and it's hotter than it has been in years.
Then again, its success is driven by the Paul Heyman-booked Bloodline saga, so...
