10 Times WCW Purposefully Lied To The Fans

7. The Freebirds Are WCW Tag Team Champions? No! Wait, What?

Back in the early 1990s, WCW used to tape shows in blocks -- each TV taping session would see the recording of several weeks' worth of programming. It was cheaper, easier, and, truth be told, the benefits of such a setup outweigh the detriments if a company needs to save money€ and if they can maintain some sense of logical booking. Apparently, saving all of that money emboldened WCW, who then felt that they didn't need to adhere to the standards of kayfabe -- or even linear storytelling. At a TV taping in Montgomery, Alabama, on February 18, 1991, The Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin) lost the WCW World Tag Team Titles to The Steiner Brothers. The only problem? They weren't the champions -- Doom (Ron Simmons and Butch Reed) were. Six days later at WrestleWar 1991 in Phoenix, Doom lost the titles to the Freebirds, and thousands of Alabamans now knew Santa Claus wasn't real, so to speak. The Freebirds' loss ended up airing on March 9, 1991, so it all made sense to the TV viewers who watched during the internet's infancy. Trying to get it all down in the record books is a pain, though. Did the Freebirds hold the titles for -6 days? Are they still the WCW Tag Team Champions? Is time just a flat circle? Clearly, more questions were asked than answered.
