10 Times Wrestlers Lost Their Title Belts

6. Jerry Lawler Loses A Belt - Part 2

World's collide here. Remember the AWA World Title that Stan Hansen flattened? Yeah? And remember Verne Gagne who curled a massive steamer out over Stan's plans thus causing him to flatten it? Yeah? Well you'll never guess which difficult booker created a needlessly messy championship situation that resulted in the loss of a belt...

Ok so, following SuperClash 3, Jerry Lawler was holding the aforementioned AWA belt having beaten Kerry Von Erich. Unifying it with the World Class title in the process into one huge rasslin' super belt. The plan was Lawler would then tour around with both belts and help promote both brands in the process. Gagne, as he was prone to doing back then, changed his mind about the whole thing and demanded that Lawler give him the belt back.

I mean, fair enough, it's his promotion and his belt, but Lawler was still to be paid for SuperClash and, very reasonably, said he'd return it in exchange for the money he was owed. Gagne - and you're not going to believe this - refused to do that, and Lawler kept the thing, even using it as stand-in for the USWA Championship for literally years.

Maybe I should do a list on Gagne... hmmm
