Sometimes one man can cause as much mayhem as a frenzied crowd. Blackjack Mulligan, the maternal grandfather of Bray Wyatt and Bo Dallas, discovered this, but turned a violent attack into just another career anecdote.

On 15 May 1971, Mulligan faced off against Pedro Morales at a WWWF (now WWE) event held in Boston, Massachusetts. The babyface Morales made fevered followers of the Latin fanbase whom he represented. They reviled any heel who challenged for his World Championship. Meanwhile, Mulligan was already surrounded by considerable heel heat.

The planned match was skewed when a man jumped out of the crowd and stabbed Mulligan in the thigh with a stiletto knife. Mulligan tried to grasp his attacker but was slashed across the arm. It was left up to babyface Gorilla Monsoon to break kayfabe and throw the heel’s attacker out of the ring. Attempts to put pressure on the wound with towels failed as they soaked up blood.

It was later discovered that the wound had been deliberately infected by the attacker, who had soaked his blade in pig fat. Mulligan was accompanied to the hospital by an armed co-worker, dodging angry fans. After the infection was treated, Mulligan’s wound required 100 stitches.
