WWE had a packed card for the inaugural Day 1 event in 2022, and one of the planned matches was the Universal Championship contest between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar. However, things didn't turn out as planned, as Reigns got pulled out of the event after he tested positive for COVID-19.

WWE could've just postponed the match to another event but decided, since Lesnar was already in the venue, they might as well put him as a last-minute addition to the WWE Championship match, which also featured Big E, Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, and Bobby Lashley.

According to Dave Meltzer, if the Universal Championship match hadn't been canceled, Seth Rollins would've walked out of the event as the new WWE Champion. But things changed at the last minute, and "The Beast Incarnate" ended up pinning Big E to win his sixth WWE Championship. Meltzer had reported before the event that the Universal Championship match would eventually lead to a WrestleMania 38 match between Lesnar and Reigns. If things had gone as planned, Reigns and Lesnar would've competed for the Universal title at WrestleMania 38 while the WWE title would've been free for the other wrestlers. But the sudden change led to Roman Reigns becoming the undisputed champion and reigning supreme until WrestleMania 40.
