10 Times WWE Gave The Internet Wrestling Community What They Wanted

8. Edge Defeats John Cena

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_2H6vIZR4g "Edge has shocked the world!" That was one of the last things viewers tuning into New Years Revolution in 2006 heard. Joey Styles' call of the shocking main event was one of the many memorable things about that night. Since winning the title from JBL at WrestleMania 21, John Cena had begun to see the IWC turn against him. It's hard to imagine, but Cena himself was once an IWC golden boy in a few circles. It's difficult to say whether or not Edge was the IWC's first choice to slay the dragon known as John Cena, but on this night, it didn't matter. Cena had reached 280 days as WWE Champion. Some seven months before, Edge had won the first ever Money in the Bank ladder match. He'd held onto it all this time, and the ultimate opportunist was not keen to just throw his chance away. Instead, he waited until John Cena was at his absolute weakest and pounced. It took two spears to get the job done, but finally, Edge pinned Cena and won the WWE Championship for the first time in his career. And even though Edge was playing a heel, the WWE Universe was buzzing that night and clearly wanted a new champion. The WWE listened, and gave them exactly what they wanted. Cena's defeat was met with the IWC's instant approval. He would eventually regain the title less than a month later at the Royal Rumble, but no one will ever forget Edge's shining moment, and the many he went on to have.
