10 Times WWE Got "The Guy" Wrong
1. Hulk Hogan
And on the subject of the guy the WWF repeatedly did all they could to replace over the years, 'The Hulkster' was actually the damn problem on the night of WrestleMania IX, and the months that followed.
You see, coming into that show, Yokozuna had been built up as a serious threat to Bret Hart's reign as WWF Champion, and a new top monster that many a plucky babyface would look to overcome in the coming years. But instead of committing to the finish of 'Zuna lifting the winged-eagle at the end of that Las Vegas 'Show of Shows', Vince McMahon had other, idiotic plans.
Late in the day, and after being talked into the idea by Hulk Hogan, he opted to suddenly throw the returning legend into an impromptu main event, with the icon besting this villainous project post-Hart win in a matter of seconds to the sound of cheers throughout Caesar's Palace.
That call to have Hogan hold the title and be the company's top guy for their upcoming international tour (according to Bruce Prichard) made both of McMahon's New Generation talents look crap.
And a soon-to-be departing Hogan's refusal to drop the title to Hart (he didn't feel he was a main event level player at the time) along with the cheap way he eventually lost it back to 'Zuna (fireball to the face, as you do) just made the company's decision to strap him up in Vegas seem more foolish in hindsight.
Your top guy also burying the belt as a "toy" in Japan isn't exactly the best look either.
