10 Times WWE Stars Were Scapegoats For Bad Booking
1. John Cena
John Cena is perhaps the most controversial WWE superstar of all time, and it's all thanks to his booking.
It took the Doctor of Thuganomics nearly three years to rise to the top of the card, but once he finally got there in 2005, he stayed there for nearly a decade. Much like previous-entry Roman Reigns, Cena was booked to rarely lose (let alone lose clean) and to be the main focus of every show, PPV or otherwise. Fans grew tired of the act quickly, so they blamed Cena (and, in some cases, Randy Orton) for pretty much everything wrong with WWE.
But there was one small problem with that - Cena wasn't the one booking himself to win all the time.
Save for that one time at SummerSlam 2010 when he refused to put over The Nexus for some reason, Cena hasn't been known to actively quell other people's pushes in the way that Hulk Hogan did before him. While some former WWE talents (i.e. Tyler Reks, Kenny Dykstra, Alex Riley, etc.) have suggested the contrary, other stars like Rob Van Dam, Evan Bourne, and even CM Punk have publicly challenged the notion that Cena was the one holding wrestlers back.
Yes, Cena won far too often for far too long, but who could reasonably blame him for accepting that role in the company? The answer is "nobody," but many fans sure as hell tried.
