8. Daniel Bryan In The Royal Rumble
WWE used Daniel Bryan’s push (or lack thereof) to screw with the fans in dozens of ways throughout his career, but two Royal Rumbles stand-out among the most notable moments. The Yes! Movement was gathering incredible speed by the time of the 2014 Royal Rumble, and after losing to Bray Wyatt on the undercard, DB was the fans’ choice to win.
Entrant after entrant passed without a trace of him, however, and the “Daniel Bryan” chants were deafening as the match hit number 30. Out stepped Rey Mysterio, who instantly became the biggest heel in the building, and Bryan was omitted from the match completely.
Things weren’t much better the following year either. Bryan had recently returned from injury, and was one of the first men to announce his participation in the Rumble. He came out to a huge ovation at number 10, and as one of the pre-match favourites, it looked like the Rumble would finally belong to him.
Wrong. Bryan was unceremoniously dumped out of the match after just 10 minutes, and the fans spent the rest of the match jeering their hearts out. Roman Reigns’ eventual victory went down terribly, and the #CancelWWENetwork movement was born. The company had duped Bryan’s fanbase for the second year running, and Reigns’ popularity has never been the same since.
