Like Damien Sandow four years before him, Baron Corbin's crowning as WWE's briefcase w*nker in 2017 should have been a home run. Rare for the time, WWE deserved praise. They selected an emerging mid-carder who'd always been a good hand and stamped him with their seal of approval by guaranteeing him an opportunity at a World Title.
Like Damien Sandow four years before him, Baron Corbin's status as a wasteful Money in the Bank champion came with the cash-in. John Cena goaded him into parting with his luggage, distracting Baron long enough for Jinder Mahal, the reigning WWE Champion, to underwhelm with the most basic wrestling technique, a schoolboy rollup.
Like Damien Sandow four years before him, Baron Corbin was then booked into the grave. He lost to John Cena at SummerSlam a week later without putting up much of a fight, and while he did manage to snag the United States Championship by October, it was a reign that was about as memorable as anything he said while serving as Constable of Raw.
