10 Times WWE And WCW Screwed Over Their World Champions

2. Ric Flair's Firing In 1991

Jim Herd is a highly criticized figure in wrestling, his tenure as Executive Vice President of WCW was particularly hated, as he attempted to dilute the serious wrestling product of the then NWA affiliated World Champion Wrestling into a cheap and blatant copy of the WWF. One gigantic blunder in particular was his decision to try and re-brand Ric Flair, which led to him talking down to the then-WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Herd had removed Flair as head booker and also wanted him to take a substantial pay cut. He even asserted that they needed to repackage Flair in order to stay relevant, asking him to drop the Nature Boy gimmick, shave his head, wear a diamond earring and bill himself as Spartacus. Herd was also quoted as wanting to reduce Flair's role in WCW drastically. Having had enough of Herd's ridiculous demands and lack of wrestling knowledge, Ric Flair refused. Jim Herd promptly fired him, leaving WCW without one of their best talents and their current world champion. While Ric Flair was slowly screwed out of his position in WCW as the number #1 player, he certainly landed on his feet in the WWF. Jim Herd was fired for his incompetence in 1992.
