1. Mercury Rising

The above image goes most of the way to expressing how unlucky Joey Mercury was to find his face absolutely haemorrhaging at the mid-point of a last-minute filler match on a lowest-priority filler pay-per-view. But the MNM star leaving half of his face behind on the side of a ladder required more than just the minor misplacement of Jeff Hardy's terrifying teeter-totter spot.

Mercury was the toast of the company alongside partner Johnny Nitro in late-2006 after they joined Matt and Jeff in almost salvaging the disastrous ECW December To Dismember show with a creditable opener. WWE were keen to placate their loyalest supporters ordering Armageddon two weeks later, but had observed a need for something wilder than the planned run-of-the-mill doubles battle pitting Brian Kendrick and Paul London against David Taylor and William Regal anchoring the midcard. The quartet were airlifted in, and they brought a ladder with them.

The contest was comfortably the best match of the night and went some way to repairing relations with a ripped-off audience. The personal and professional cost to Mercury sadly went beyond the horrendous facial damage, though. It regrettably reinitiated his losing battle with pain medication, resulting in him eventually losing his job with the company despite his exemplary in-ring efforts.
