10 Unbelievable Wrestling Fan Theories

3. The Wrestling Media Has Been Co-Opted By AEW

The pro wrestling media is biased!

Tony Khan was smart enough to recognise the currency of critical acclaim to form AEW in the first place - Kenny Omega's back-to-back Tokyo Dome performances in 2017 and 2018 convinced him to make real his 'World's Best Wrestling' idea - and to ensure his new company generated yet more of it. He facilitated this by paying the Dave Meltzers of the world a sizeable fee to sweeten their coverage of AEW Dynamite.

The masterplan worked; Dynamite, after securing a $174M rights fee in 2020, has made a very strong start to this new, unopposed era. It is recognised as the best weekly wrestling TV show because those neckbeard smarks that subscribe to the Observer voted it as such in the recent Awards issue.

This is a real thing.

Every time Bryan Alvarez tweets about anything, lunatics swarm his replies to ask just how much Tony Khan is paying him. Even other members of the wrestling media - who actually have been co-opted by job title - circulate the same theory.

It can't possibly be that Monday Night RAW is an atrocious mess arrogant enough to literally book the exact same segments over two consecutive weeks. It can't possibly be that the wrestlers are so disillusioned that they themselves bury the company on every episode of RAW Talk. It can't possibly be that WWE is so monumentally inept that they botched Edge's "beloved legend returns from career-ending injury to end run on fairytale note" storyline.

WWE can't possibly be bad.

No: the wrestling media criticises WWE because Tony Khan pays them money to do it!
