8. Egg On Gene's Face
It’s difficult to determine whether or not this was in fact unintentional. On the one hand, the infamous Gobbledy Gooker spot culminated in a giant egg hatching, whereupon a man-sized turkey (dutifully performed by Hector Guerrero) hopped onto the canvas and danced a jig with Mean Gene, to the bemusement of a live crowd.
It sounds funny, and it was. On the other hand, this came at the climax of a fairly long angle in which WWE teased the egg, and encouraged the fans to speculate as to what could possibly be inside it. The result was going to be exciting, Gene promised the crowd. Something you’d never expect!
Well, in a sense. We certainly didn’t expect a great big turkey (though in retrospect, what else was going to emerge from the great big egg?), but it raises the question: what were the producers hoping the response would be to this?
WWE treats the incident as a dumb joke now, but given the hype leading up to the reveal, presumably they were taking this stunt at least somewhat seriously at the time. The early ‘90s were a funny old time
