10 Unlikeliest WWE WrestleMania Main-Eventers
1. Steve Austin
Yep. At one point, even the hottest star wrestling has ever produced was seen as disposable. By several companies.
In late 1995, Steve Austin was a WCW reject who was pushed to the side by Eric Bischoff because he didn't have the "star quality" of a Hulk Hogan or Randy Savage. There were people in the industry like Paul Heyman who saw what he was capable of, but Paul Heyman wasn't the one writing the big cheques and making the important decisions. Nor were Bruce Prichard and Jim Cornette when they pitched Austin to Vince McMahon. They saw him as the next big thing, but VInce? He saw a guy who couldn't get over because he had "a Texas accent."
When Austin made his PPV debut for the company at Royal Rumble 1996, no one could have foreseen that he would win the match the following two years. No one could have imagined that he'd bring WWE back to relevance and kickstart the hottest era in company history. It seemed to all happen so quickly.
Whether or not Becky Lynch does indeed get that main event at WrestleMania 35, there will always be a lineage of people who were never groomed for that spot, but they earned it regardless.
