10 Unthinkable WrestleMania Records WWE Will Break Soon
9. Two 5 Star Matches At One WrestleMania
Whether you love or hate Dave Meltzer and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, his match ratings get people talking.
Over 200 matches have been rated five stars or more since Ric Flair vs. Butch Reed was awarded the honour in 1987, but WWE has rarely been given that top prize. Meltzer has decided that a WWE match was worthy of five stars only 16 times, the last being Gunther vs. Sheamus at Clash at the Castle in 2022.
It sounds like it could be a real uphill battle to get two matches with a top rating at one WrestleMania, considering that's the combined total of every WrestleMania in history. Right now, only Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels from 'Mania X and Bret Hart vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin from 'Mania 13 have that honour, but there has to be more on the way.
Here's why (hello, Simon Miller!) it could happen soon:
Cody Rhodes, Gunther, John Cena, Seth Rollins, and Sheamus are already booked for WrestleMania 39, with AJ Styles, Johnny Gargano, Ricochet, Roderick Strong, Trent Seven, and Tyler Bate all employed by WWE too.
Everybody on that list has been in a five-star match before, so why can't they do it again? Meltzer has gotten more lenient with his ratings since the 2000s, when he only awarded seven matches his top rating across that decade; not even the greatest WWE pay-per-view, WrestleMania X-Seven, managed to have a match that topped his ranking system.
Despite claims Meltzer prefers AEW and promotions in Japan, if WWE can put on even more classic matches at WrestleMania this year, they'll be reaching for the stars. If they can't, look at the talent in NXT that will eventually make it to the main roster.
With Triple H at the helm, this one has to happen soon.
