Who would have thought that the year’s most talked-about wrestling match would take place outside WWE?
Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega set the internet ablaze on January 4th, with their incredible Wrestle Kingdom 11 showdown earning an ultra-rare rare six-star rating from The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, and sending wrestling fans around the world into a frenzy.
It has widely been held-up as one of the greatest wrestling matches of all time. Finishing at a lofty 46 minutes, 45 seconds, it slowly built to a stunning conclusion that saw both men take some death-defying bumps before Okada eventually put his obsessive challenger down, cementing his status as NJPW’s alpha competitor.
Omega took a brief hiatus from the company in the aftermath. He earned his rematch by defeating Okada’s stablemate Tomohiro Ishii last month, and the match was made for June 11th’s Dominion event.
Anticipation is naturally through the roof, but how do you improve on a six-star rating? It’s impossible to say at this point, but both are among the most driven competitors in the world.
