10 Ups & 0 Downs From AEW Dynamite: Fyter Fest (Jul 1)

3. Layers Upon Layers Upon Layers

FTR Hangman Page Kenny Omega
AEW

On the surface, Fyter Fest's post-main event angle was just a bunch of dudes getting mouthy and gently shoving each other around, as FTR, The Young Bucks, and Hangman Page and Kenny Omega came within a breath of laying hands on each other. Reducing it to that is a huge injustice, though: this thing was layered like an onion.

Compare the enthusiasm with which the Bucks congratulated Omega to their frosty greeting of Page, keeping the long-term storyline simmering away. How about Page shouting at Kenny after pouring the beer out, staying true to his hard-drinking character, chastising Omega for start a ruckus, and highlighting his increased selfishness? 'The Best Bout Machine' pouring his beer out is a symbol of his purity and dedication to The Elite.

The FTR/Bucks relationship is layered in itself as AEW simultaneously builds respect and disrespect between the two world-beating tandems. It was already a compelling dynamic on its own: throw Omega and Page into the mix and it's even more fascinating.

This small, straightforward angle was a product of elite storytelling and character development. You simply cannot pull off something so simple (and yet so deep) without doing the legwork first. Here, at the very top of the tag division, AEW is constructing a universe within a universe.
