10 Ways To Make WWE's Brand Split More Compelling
3. Kevin Dunn Gives Up Control
Kevin Dunn has been the man responsible for the overall look of WWE for closing in on 30 years. It’s time to shake things up.
He’s done an admirable job in the role, but he hasn’t won over a lot of people behind the scenes. Some speculate that when Stephanie and Hunter take over from Vince, Dunn will be one of the first to go. While he doesn’t need to give up directing both Raw and SmackDown at the moment, he should absolutely give up one of them.
Right now SmackDown just feels like a two hour extension of Raw with different people on-screen. The camera angles are largely the same, they both use stupid WWE lingo like "WWE Universe" and "SmackDown Live!" the backstage interviews are done the same way and the interviewers themselves still do that idiotic thing where after they’re done talking to a wrestler they gaze off into the distance expressionless, not noting that there’s a camera still in front of them recording.
The shows need to have a different feel to make this work. You can get more fans to watch if they feel they're getting a different product. If Shane and Steph really were in control, why would their TV shows look exactly the same? Wouldn't they hire different personnel?
The idea of different directors of the show was floated years ago during the initial split. Dunn apparently blew a gasket over the suggestion. Perhaps he’s ready to give up some of his workload now, and if he’s not, then someone needs to make him.
