10 Ways WWE Will Be Different In 10 Years
1. The Search For The Top Star Will End... For Good
This might be the biggest stretch, but it’s one I think could become a reality. For generations, wrestling promotions operated on the logic of having a top babyface star to carry the company. From the time WWE was the World Wide Wrestling Federation, they had Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales, Bob Backlund, Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, The Rock, John Cena–all of whom were the faces of the company. They were the top draws, and from Hulk’s time onward, most of the key television angles were booked around them.
As of right now, WWE is still trying to find their top guy, and with Roman Reigns being rejected again and again, it’s clear he’s not it… but then again, I don’t think anyone will be.
People have access to more kinds of wrestling than ever before, and they see a world now where wrestlers move from place to place, and they might have their favorites, but everyone wants variety. They like all the different matchups, lots of title changes, and everything to be spiced up after a little bit. The era of having one guy to carry the company for years just doesn’t make sense when the audience’s patience is smaller than ever.
There will always be a pool of main eventers, but I don’t think WWE will ever annoint someone to carry the whole company. As they expand their brands and offerings to a worldwide audience, who the champion or RAW or SmackDown is will matter less and less. Whether that’s good or bad remains to be seen, but regardless, I think the era of the top babyface is bygone. We’re now approaching a new world of wrestling, and it’ll be interesting to see how WWE changes as a result.
