10 Weirdest AEW Main Events Ever

5. The Devil’s Masked Men vs MJF - New Year’s Smash 2023

The 2023 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Award for Worst Feud of the Year was awarded to MJF versus The Devil and there were very few complaints about that.

Part of the rivalry between Mr. Friedman and the man who was eventually revealed as Adam Cole involved the Ring of Honor Tag Team Championships, which Cole and MJF were the holders of.

On the New Year's Smash Dynamite in December 2023, two of the Devil's Masked Men challenged the best friends for the belts. There was just one problem - Cole was injured. Ever the hero, Max went it alone, taking on the two mysterious baddies on his own. This didn't end well for him.

MJF, who was also AEW World Champion at the time, got pinned to drop the titles to the henchmen. The top star in the company had just been beaten by two nameless nobodies for a secondary set of tag championships, and everyone was supposed to just go along with it.

The goons were eventually revealed to be Matt Taven and Mike Bennett of The Undisputed Kingdom, a faction that have gone absolutely nowhere since this bizarre angle.
