The Undertaker went through a major character overhaul in the late 90s, as he transformed into the much more devious and far more sinister "Lord of Darkness" Taker.

In this incarnation, he regularly terrorized the likes of Stephanie McMahon, citing a "power that is greater than he" as the one instructing him to do so. Even after Shane McMahon usurped control of the Corporation from his father and merged it with Undertaker's Ministry of Darkness, there was still this "higher power" leading the way for Taker and his minions.

Rumors swirled about who the "higher power" could possibly be, with names like Jake Roberts and Don Callis among the most popular. But in June of 1999, the mysterious overlord finally revealed himself to be none other than...Vince McMahon.

First off, how in the world does this make any sense? Why would Vince be in cahoots with his son, who stole his throne, and a group of Satanic zealots hellbent on torturing his own daughter? The best possible answer to this is that he was trying to stick it to Stone Cold Steve Austin, who was squabbling with both the Corporation and the Ministry at the time.

So, just to get back at Austin, Vince fed Ryan Shamrock to the Ministry, had his own daughter kidnapped and nearly forced into marriage, and had The Big Boss Man f***ing HANGED. That's a bit overkill, don't'cha think?

Anyway, while this did produce one of McMahon's most famous lines ("it's me, Austin!"), it made absolutely no sense and nobody really ended up benefiting from it.
