Something edited out of the dominant narrative by the Stalinist revisionism at the heart of the WWE is the fact that the WWF's business in the mid-nineties lagged worse than video on a dial-up connection.

Ratings were diabolical, and the product itself was lazy, creatively-bankrupt bullsh*t.

If you think this is an exaggeration, please do try watching an episode or two or RAW from 1995. They're only forty-five minutes long, but they feel soooooo much longer.

While you can't blame Diesel - the once and future Kevin Nash - for the crapulence of the programming, you can certainly lay some responsibility on him for his lacklustre performances in the role of WWF Champion from November 1994 to November 1995.

The remainder of the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of whoever was booking his godawful run.

Not only did ratings tank, but pay-per-view buys were off by a vast margin from the previous year. Diesel's been called the worst-drawing WWF/E Champion in history. It's difficult to say with complete certainty that this is absolutely 100% accurate... but if it's not, it's not far off.

Faced with a dull, directionless main event narrative anchored by a huge, slow millstone who only started figuring out how to talk halfway through his run, WWE fans in 1994/1995 voted with their feet.

Comparisons have been made with Roman Reigns and, while some are valid, let's all hope it doesn't get that bad.
