10 Worst WWE Moments Of 2009
7. Edge’s Injury Wrecks An All-Timer Tag Run
The tag-team ranks were pretty much plodding along without making waves when Chris Jericho and Edge teamed together to win the Unified Tag Titles from The Colons at The Bash on 28 June 2009. Legacy duo Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase were also in that match, but the night belonged to a pair of Canadian heroes who'd surely go on to dominate the doubles conversation for the rest of the year.
That's when fate intervened.
Less than a full week after winning the belts, Edge was struck down by a nasty Achilles tendon tear during a house show match vs. Jeff Hardy on 3 July. Rather than stripping he and Jericho of their newly-won titles, creative pivoted towards a sub and had 'Y2J' bring out Big Show as a 'Rated-R Replacement'. At first, fans were annoyed, but then Jeri-Show actually proved themselves to be rather handy as champs.
Still, what could've been. People were robbed of seeing an all-timer run from Edge and Jericho. Who knows? They might've turned into one of the greatest tag-teams of all time and held the straps for years. Probably not, but it'll always be one of WWE's biggest 'what if?' moments from that era.
Jericho kicked off a feud with Edge once his would-be pal returned. That was...fine. Nowhere near as satisfying as seeing them combine to become an all-conquering super team, but fine. If only Edge and Hardy hadn't gone full pelt in their non-televised live event bout. Curse those high standards!
'Rated-Y2J' could've been amazing. Bring it back, maaaaaaaaan.
