Prior to 2015, most named 1999 as the worst Royal Rumble on record. There weren't a great deal of spots to speak of, the majority of the entries were fairly low rent and the entire thing revolved around when Steve Austin will eventually come back to win the match.

Mr. McMahon and Stone Cold entered the Rumble at numbers 1 and 2 respectively, a short while into the match, Austin was lured backstage to be beaten down by the Corporation, spending the majority of the match out of the ring, as did Vince who sat at the commentary table until the Rattlesnake's inevitable return.

Austin has been apart of some pretty bad Rumble finishes in his time, 1998 and 2001 notwithstanding. In his first Rumble, he accidentally slipped out of the match and wasn't able to be part of the finish. He won the 1997 by fluke as he was clearly eliminated but because the referees didn't see, it didn't count. 1999 is the worst, however.

After a very nothing match, Steve Austin cleared the field, brought McMahon back into the ring where they fought until The Rock came out to distract his arch-rival long enough for the Chairman of the Board to throw Austin over the rope and win the match. No-one wanted this. No-one expected Vince to challenge for the championship at WrestleMania 15.

Austin relinquished the opportunity shortly after and Austin fought Rock in the main event anyway, making the McMahon victory pointless.
