What a depressing middle finger in the face of the WWE Universe this was. The great underdog story of 2019, a tale that gave fans the first genuine WrestleMania moment since Daniel Bryan's 'Mania XXX triumph (how ironic), was brought to a crushingly miserable climax in less than 15 seconds. Why? Something something ratings, something something Cain Velasquez.

The main event of the first SmackDown on Fox may well end up being a case study in the eventual 'Death of WWE' degree. Much of what is wrong about modern-day WWE can be found in this match, from the slavish obsession with stars of the past to a seemingly insatiable desire to anger the fans at every possible opportunity. Kofi Kingston winning the WWE Championship was a beacon of hope in the harbour of pain that is being a WWE fan; Lesnar ending that reign in just nine seconds was the light at the end of the tunnel turning out to be an onrushing train.

What is there to say about the match itself? Nothing. Kofi ran at Brock, Lesnar hit an F-5, Charles Robinson counted to three. Thank you, f*ck you, goodbye.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man.
