10 Wrestlers Who Became Involved In Politics

1. Jesse 'The Body' Ventura

He may not have time to bleed, but Jesse 'The Body' Ventura made time after his professional wrestling (and commentating) career ended to try and improve the lives of Minnesotans everywhere. He experienced immediate success, surprisingly winning the election for mayor of Brooklyn Park (Minnesota) in 1990, defeating a 25-year incumbent in the process.

Ventura wasn't satisfied with this however, and in 1998 he ran for Governor of Minnesota. Ventura's campaign was characteristically aggressive, being particularly ahead of his time in using the internet to gather support. Despite spending considerably less than his opponents Ventura won the election, and sales of 'my governor can beat up your governor' bumper stickers sky-rocketed.

The Body decided against running for a second term and his run as governor came to an end in 2003. To say he was outspoken would be an understatement, but he always spoke with a sense of sanity and belief behind his words, as opposed to the excitable screams of a Donald Trump. Recently Ventura flirted with the idea of running in the 2016 US Presidential Elections under the Libertarian Party, but nothing has come of it.

A campaign in 2020? Don't rule it out.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
