Fans thought they knew what was going to happen at WrestleMania 34.
Roman Reigns - Vince McMahon's favourite toy - was facing Brock Lesnar in the main event. Everyone knew that he was going to avenge his loss from three years ago and win the Universal Championship, finally reaching the top of the mountain. However, this is exactly what didn't happen.
Instead, Lesnar beat Reigns in a match as bloody as it was confusing. Against rumours that Brock was going back to UFC, against the story that was being told, against all logic, Brock retained the gold.
Not only that, but Lesnar retained the belt again at Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia, against the greater logic that a casual crowd would be sympathetic to a Reigns win.
Instead, Brock held the belt until August, when he finally lost it to Reigns at SummerSlam.
Nobody wanted Reigns to win, but they definitely didn't want this. Dragging out Brock's title reign served only to frustrate fans and leave them asking why WWE bothered to delay the inevitable.
Well, at least that's the last we saw of Brock in the main event for a while.
