Extreme Championship Wrestling was known for its preposterous bumps, and whilst glimpses of that were seen at the WWE-produced ECW One Night Stand in 2005, it was a far cry from what ECW fans remembered. One match stood out in a peculiar way that night, however, and it is a match that still flies by when watched today.

I'm talking of course about Mike Awesome vs. Masato Tanaka.

Awesome and Tanaka went at it for around 10 minutes and worked at an absolutely hellacious pace, one that saw both men wrestle as if they were being taken to the morgue directly after. Tanaka in particular is brutalised throughout. By my count he takes five chair shots to the head during the match, and is powerbombed through table after table.

One bump saw Awesome powerbomb Tanaka from the apron to the foor through a table, a spot that is reprised for the finish albeit from the ring itself as opposed to the apron. Tanaka performed as if he has little care for his neck or brain, and is quite obviously superhuman.

This match is a car-wreck, and one that is equal parts plunder and proper wrestling. Tables are smashed, yes, but they are smashed after powerbombs and tornado DDTs.

Masato Tanaka is insane.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
