‘Dirty’ Dick Slater was a ten-year veteran by the time he made his way to WWE in 1986. Debuting under a Southern rebel gimmick, Slater began his career in New York with a victory over longtime jobber, Charles ‘The Gladiator’ Sprott. Slater defeated another jobber in ‘Iron’ Mike Sharpe, only to then became a jobber himself, to Jake Roberts and Don Muraco. One year later, Slater made his final appearance in WWE, in a loss against Butch Reed.

After his short stint with the company, Dick Slater wrestled in Japan, and ended his career in WCW in 1996, after a six-year run.

Following his wrestling career, Slater struggled with an opiate addiction. At the end of 2003, he stabbed his former girlfriend, Theresa Halbert, with a butcher’s knife. Waking up in intensive care the following day, Slater had no recollection of the event, as he had been overdosing on morphine at the time of the attack.

Six months later, Slater was sentenced to house arrest for one year and had to pay $18,000 in damages to Halbert.

Dick Slater passed away in 2018.
