10 Wrestlers Who Threw Their Championships Away
7. Stone Cold Steve Austin - WWF Intercontinental Championship
By the end of 1997, Stone Cold Steve Austin was on a meteoric rise to the top of the wrestling world. He was reigning Intercontinental Champion, having defeated Owen Hart at that years infamous Survivor Series, and began a short feud with his soon-to-be longtime rival, The Rock.
In this feud, the Nation of Domination had stolen Austin's title, with the Rock declaring himself to be the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time, which set up a match between the two at D-Generation X: In Your House. Come the event, despite Nation's best efforts, Austin retained and regained the Intercontinental title.
However, Mr. McMahon declared the match unfair, since Austin had used his pickup truck to help him win and ordered him to defend the championship again on Raw. Stone Cold was having none of that.
In another famous Austin segment, he announced he would voluntarily surrender the championship to The Rock. But if he wanted the belt itself, he'd have to get his feet wet. Austin hit Rock with a stunner, left the arena with the title, took it to New Hampshire's General Sullivan Bridge and threw it down into the Piscataqua River, as well as some scuba gear to help Rocky find it.
So at least he's a considerate S.O.B.
