10 Wrestlers Who Transcended The Business
1. El Santo
Of all the wrestlers on this list, none have had the same cultural impact as Rodolfo Guzman Huerta, better known as El Santo.
Alongside Blue Demon and Mil Mascaras, El Santo is credited with popularising the "Lucha Libre" style of Mexican wrestling. El Santo has been called one of the greatest Mexican sportspeople of all time and every single luchador working in the industry today owes him a huge thank you.
Santo's legend isn't just contained to the world of pro wrestling. In 1952, he was immortalised in a comic book series that would run for 35 years and the stories told in those comics transformed Santo in a bona fide folk hero in his native land.
Santo would also appear in over 50 different movies, all under a mask, continuing to portray a legendary hero. He would also go on to have his own animated TV show, feature in the lyrics to numerous songs, and become one of the most popular media personalities in all of Mexico.
Had El Santo only ever been a wrestler, he would still have been considered a legend for his work in revolutionising the Lucha Libre style. However, when you consider all of his accomplishments outside of wrestling, he is easily one of the biggest pop culture icons of any variety.
