10 Wrestlers WWE Should’ve Signed When They Had The Chance
4. Jushin 'Thunder' Liger
If there was ever any character that WWE couldve used to rival Rey Mysterio in terms of mask merchandise, it was Jushin Liger. Based off of an anime superhero of the 1990s, Liger is widely considered to be one of the most innovative junior heavyweights in wrestling history. A multi-time Junior Heavyweight Champion in Japan and Mexico, including 11 reigns as IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, Liger wowed audiences with his impressive repertoire of aerial maneuvers, including his patented Shooting Star Press. He is a legendary name in the world of junior heavyweight wrestling, and he has also been capable of performing power and submission moves as well, proving that he wasnt a one-dimensional performer. Liger worked for WCW throughout the 1990s as part of their Cruiserweight division. While there, he was considered one of the top athletes that fans loved to watch, alongside Ultimo Dragon, Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero, and many others. Meanwhile, in the latter half of the 1990s, WWF tried to build its own junior heavyweight division with the likes of TAKA Michinoku and the Great Sasuke, but it never really took off. Had WWF acquired Liger that mightve been a different story. If they somehow managed to sign Liger, he wouldve certainly helped WWF build a division that couldve at least competed with WCW. Unfortunately, the biggest hurdle to getting Liger wouldve been the rights to his name and gimmick, which New Japan certainly wouldnt have let go of so easily. But if WWE managed to sign Liger AND gain merchandising rights over his name, character and mask, he wouldve made them as much money as Rey Mysterio did. Its a pity they didnt recognize the importance of the cruiserweights division; if they did, WWF wouldve made a lot of money on masked wrestlers aside from Rey Mysterio.
